Greetings from France
Plus: a giveaway!
Beloved Soma family,
We write this to you from a small chateau in the south of France, where we have come for our other work (it will surprise none of you to know that the owners of your favourite cacao company earn the other half of their living by teaching yoga).
Actually, this week we’re between gigs, and are spending time with our families. Many of you know that Alistair and I met eight years ago on a beach in the south of Mexico, a few hours’ drive from where we now source our excellent Mexican cacao. What you might not know is that we soon found out that both sets of our parents live about 400m apart in Sydney, or that our parents are now best friends. They meet weekly for scones and scrabble, have their own dedicated WhatsApp group (which Alistair and I have not been invited to), and have now even taken to holidaying together. Our mothers are currently downstairs sitting on one stool at the piano, squabbling about who is out of time. Our fathers are marching about town in matching prototypes of the Soma Cacao baseball cap (available soon!). Alistair’s brother and Rose’s sister are thicker than thieves, and happily pootle about the French countryside giggling at each other’s jokes. Alistair and I are really just an afterthought here.
Obviously cacao does not grow in France, and it has felt weird for us to travel somewhere that didn’t have tropical jungle or volcanoes. However, French people like to remind you that French food is the best food in the world (according to French judges), and they are particularly proud of their chocolate. So far we have not found a chocolat chaud (hot chocolate) that could hold a candle to a cup of Soma Cacao, though that has not stopped us trying many.
Actually, on this trip we have come up with a new test to determine the quality of a cacao. We all know the Taste Test, the Feel Test, and the How You Sleep That Night Test, but we’d like to introduce you to the Paris Hotel Test, which is whether you can make a decent cup of cacao using only the resources available to you in a tiny, ancient, and very expensive Paris Hotel room - ie a kettle and a mug. A lot of cacaos on the market need a whole lot of sugar, milk, or spices to make them taste acceptable, but we’re proud to think that all our Soma Cacaos taste just marvellous with a little warm water (not boiling), and a stir with one finger.
We’re excited for a long trip (five bags of Soma worth) through France, and we feel very grateful that we can leave our business so securely in the hands of Kris on communications, and Angela, Lyle, Darryl, and Renae in the warehouse. Snowbell is happily shacked up with Aunty Jo, who tells us she hasn’t worked out a way to bring Snowbell inside at night other than giving her a treat at the front door. In other words, Snowbell is plumping, but thriving.
We will still be answering emails and arranging things as much as we can from a different continent. Please be patient if we are ever so slightly slower than usual in getting around to things you ask for. We are sending you our best wishes from a very beautiful other side of the world.
With croissants and Soma Chauds,
Rose, Alistair, our families, and the team at Soma Cacao
