Our organic hojicha powder comes from tea trees that grow in the shadow of Sakurajima, Japan’s most active volcano, in the Kagoshima Prefecture of Kyushu Island.

Hojicha is made from leaves harvested in the early autumn rains, which are steamed, rolled, roasted in porcelain pots, then stone-ground to make a powder.

Our hojicha has a rich red-brown colour and a sweet, toasty, creamy flavour, with notes of cocoa and caramel. It is extremely low in caffeine, high in antioxidant polyphenols and catechins, and contains L-Theanine, which induces calm focus and improves sleep.

Known in Japan for its soothing properties, hojicha can be drunk at any time of the day or night.

HOJICHA CONTAINS CAFFEINE (but not much!)

Our hojicha contains approximately 8–15 mg of caffeine per standard 2 g serve (less caffeine than a square of dark chocolate).

Classic Hojicha

2g hojicha (approx. 1 tsp)
80 ml hot water (75–80°C, hot, not boiling)

Method: Add hojicha to a small bowl or saucepan. Add hot water. Whisk vigorously until smooth, with a dense foam on top. Pour into your cup. Sip and savour.

Hojicha Latte (Hot)

2g hojicha (approx. 1 tsp)
40ml hot water (75–80°C, hot, not boiling)
150ml steamed milk (dairy or alt)

Method: Whisk hojicha with the hot water into a concentrated shot, until no clumps remain. Pour into a cup and top with steamed milk. Alternately, add all ingredients to a small saucepan, heat slowly and whisk thoroughly. Hot tip: use our Soma Mini Mixer. Stir, sip, savour.

Iced Hojicha Latte

3g hojicha (approx. 1½ tsp)
40ml hot water (75–80°C, hot, not boiling)
150–200ml cold milk (dairy or alt)
Ice

Method: Whisk hojicha with the hot water into a smooth shot. Fill a glass with ice and cold milk. Pour the shot over the top and stir to combine.

Unlike loose-leaf hojicha, hojicha powder is whisked directly into water or milk, so you consume the whole ground tea leaf. The quality of the leaves, harvest timing, roasting method and grind all shape the flavour, texture and feel of the final cup. Premium hojicha is carefully roasted to bring out natural sweetness, warmth and depth, creating a smooth, creamy tea with notes of cocoa and caramel — without the bitterness or harsh smokiness found in some lower-quality hojicha.
